| Descripción | What happens when you read a book? What happens when you watch a movie? Are the “texts??? (novels, poems, films or television) we read simply entertainment? Do these texts shape us as individuals? Do they engage actively with culture and the world around us? At Booth College, we place particular emphasis on understanding literature, film and related media within a larger context of liberal arts – philosophy, psychology, political science, history. Our English and Film programs offer students an opportunity to explore British, American, Canadian, and other literatures from the past and present in small classes with passionate instructors. Courses are organized in various ways: according to historical periods, nationalities, genres, themes, and theoretical issues. WHY STUDY ENGLISH AND FILM? Students who study English or Film Studies have different backgrounds and interests. What they share is An enjoyment of reading different kinds of texts An intellectual curiosity An openness to new and different ways of thinking At Booth College, the most important things you will learn are the skills needed to think and evaluate judgments and engage in evaluation of others people’s judgments. Courses in English and Film Studies are designed to teach you think critically: understand and evaluate situations and draw conclusions read critically: understand the subtleties of structure, genre, style and the motivations that drive them communicate critically: write and argue evidence-based analysis The objectives of English and Film Studies at Booth are to give students: An understanding of the historical context of literature and film and how both have changed over time An appreciation of texts from a variety of historical periods, styles, genres and national origins Knowledge of contemporary developments in critical analysis and theory A critical vocabulary to discuss and write about literature, film and related media |
